An antique picnic basket has already been put to great use with many more picnics in its future.

A snuggle on the beach. It may not have been the warmest day but there was sun so we headed to the sand and sea.

There has been gin. Lots of lovely gin. This particular cup is a bees knees and it is just that. More on that to come.

Morning muffins in the tent we set up in the yard just because. It’s Summer, the time to do those sorts of things.

Again, lots of lovely gin. This time with tonic and lime.

Barbie – our charcoal burning, smoke infusing, and well-loved friend’s inaugural run provided us with grilled vegetables and pork chops.

Since Summer hit there hasn’t been a day that has gone by when my house is void of Peonies. I’m relishing this season that produces these flowers with their feathery petals and sweet grandma-like perfume. This bunch is paired with a handful of parsley that has gone to seed.

We are just a few days in to Summer and already it’s been just as it should be – relaxed, free of any sort of routine, piles of laundry with clothes dotted with stains from chocolate ice cream, strawberries, and vivid green grass.

What does your Summer look like?

Happy Weekend.

Film Friday is part of a series in which I post a few film shots taken throughout the week. I’ve recently fallen back in love with film. These images were shot with a Canon A1 and a Canon EOS ELAN 7E. All images were shot using Kodak Portra 400.

Check out the other posts in the series.

Love the tent in the yard just because it’s summer and you do such sort of thing. Really, lovely. For now my summer has been reading Gabriel Garcia Marquez, eating raspberries and raspberries popsicles, going out in the evening and smelling the air filled with fried fish and jasmine.

Can’t wait to hear more about the gin 🙂 Summer for the husband and I is grilling on the porch of our little apartment, watching birds on the pond, and the occasional long lunch with a bottle of champagne (playing hookie).

I love your picnic basket. Timeless. Looking forward to hearing more about that cup of gin. Our summer the past two weeks has been unusually cold after record highs the week before. I’m looking forward to the predicted week of warmth and dryness coming up starting today. Have a wonderful weekend!

@Shaina – We’ve had lots of rain around here too. Makes the sunny days that much more special and filled with much adventure. Thanks for commenting. Gin coming soon! 🙂

Goodness, how fantastically lovely. I really enjoy your transitions from whimsical, older looking photos into the sharper images (portrait and grill shots). It’s reflective of modern life I think, and feels so casual without losing artistic cohesion.

Beautiful photos!! And can’t wait to hear about the Gin. Have to admit, I’ve never known quite what to do with it! As for your picnics, do you have standard dishes that work well for your family, or do you mix things up each time? I’ve always been stumped for what else to take besides sandwiches and fruit.

    • Ashley Rodriguez

@Crystal – I like to mix up our picnics. My personal favorite is just a great selection of meats and cheeses and a hearty loaf of bread that we just rip in to. I like dips, spreads and crackers. There is always seasonal fruit. Wraps are also a great sandwich substitute. We do a lot of picnics in our front yard so often we’ll just bring outside whatever we are having for dinner.

What beautiful photos. I loved building a tent in the back yard for the kids when they were little. It DID feel like we were camping when we were inside.

Nothing better than a picnic by the ocean. It’s winter here but we still go to the beach — it’s only 5 minutes from home.

Hey there Mamma. I love the tent in the backyard. Right now our diversion is the garden in the backyard, but I hear you on the laundry with ice cream, grass, berry stains. All the time! I end up cleaning it, but then I have Mt. McKinley of clean laundry and by the time I have finished posting at night, I just wave goodnight to it until the next day.

P.S. We did strawberry lemonade for our picnic in Golden Gate Park this week. No gin, but plenty delicious.

    • Ashley Rodriguez

@Anne Marie – Oh how I wish my garden was big enough to create more than a 5 minute diversion. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy with what I have but I look forward to the days of having a large, lush garden. I’m so glad I’m not the only one with Mt. Laundry. You’ve made me feel so much better.

Summer is full of different kinds of “camps” for us. Looking forward to our trip to the East Coast next week though. Like your photos and hold a soft spot for film but have to say you can get these looks with digital if you want.

We need to have a picnic together! (and maybe some gin together as well). Let’s make that happen this summer. I would love to see you guys. xox
