Thanksgiving: A Foodies Feast

The holidays… all around a wonderful time of year but for me it is extra special because food and eager eaters are in abundance.

Traditionally my mom has done the majority of the cooking. But this year I have been nominated to be in charge. The items you would find on our holiday table are dressed up versions of the traditional Thanksgiving dishes, and although as we grow older and our tastes become more refined we continue to come back to the classics. Creamy garlic mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes with butter, brown sugar and marshmallows, bread stuffing with mushrooms, tart cranberry and orange sauce, and my personal favorite… pumpkin pie.

Last year my husband and I had a very non-traditional Thanksgiving. Living in L.A. we were without a family for the Holidays. Thankfully Sherry invited us to her home with a few friends and co-workers. On the 12th floor of a gorgeous L.A. apartment building we had a fabulous, albeit not familiar Thanksgiving. One of the chefs at Spago cooked us a turkey for our thanksgiving in return we baked him a few pies for his festivities. We had creamy and cheesy potatoes, sweet potato gratin, fresh salad, and an abundance of fresh baked pies.

We did have a great time in L.A. but I am very excited to be back home this year. My entire family will be together which only happens a couple times a year and there have been a few more additions since the last time we were all together.

I have yet to decide what I will be showcasing this year… I tend to push the traditional boundaries a bit but I am having a glorious time basking in the excitement that on Thursday I will be spending the entire day in the kitchen with my family cooking, baking, eating and being thankful.

Oh and did I mention my husband and I will be attending 3 Thanksgivings this year… Thursday, Saturday AND Sunday! I’ll probably be sleeping most of next week to recover.

Here are a few photos from last year’s Thanksgiving.

I created this Fairy cake for my three year old cousin’s birthday party. Pink marshmallow fondant covers the cake, edible pearls create a quilted look and gumpaste flowers decorate the top of the cake. The fairy is a finger puppet that I thought my cousin would enjoy playing with once the cake was devoured.

A basic, super moist, yellow cake in alternating layers of pink and white make up the base of the cake. The filling is a luscious pink whippped cream. Folded organic frozen raspberries gives the cream the beautiful natural pink color.

Sadly I was not able to watch her enjoy it as I had another event, but I had such a fun time creating it for her special day.

p.s. The baby in the first photo is my sweet baby boy. I am planing on making him a very manly cake for his birthday (in May 🙂 )
