I hope we get there too one day…so far we’ve done a couple short-trips down south, but no ‘big’ European adventures with the kids yet. We ARE diaper free though, so this gives me inspiration!

The children will never forget their time with Mom and Dad exploring France. I look forward to the season of my life where I can travel with my children as well as my nieces and nephews. I would love to experience a large family trip to all the islands and countries that make up our heritage.

Happy Tuesday

You paint the picture of your family so perfectly and it’s exactly what I dream about for mine. I always say that with your Date Night In book too. I have a toddler and am pregnant so it’s not my season to make semi- all day meals right now (too exhausted!) but I read your book frequently for the stories and know that my time is coming back to cook like this in a couple years. That’s how I feel about this post! Traveling with a toddler is SO much work! I love how you didn’t forget your travel dreams and started your international trips when it became “easy” and the youngest is 5. Thank you for posting! I’ll come back again and again to read this!

What a special time for you guys – something they’ll look back on and appreciate even more than they may express now. You two make such wonderful parents. I enjoy seeing glimpses into it.

This is mega-inspiring as I contemplate travel with my future kids. My husband and I love to travel and I fear that our travel will be limited when we add kids to our family. I love the approach you took and how you balanced your kid’s needs with the realities of traveling. ❤️

I reposted it to our Penguino page as it’s such a great resource for families considering when and how to venture off on a big international adventure with their kids!

I don’t have kids, and didn’t leave the US until my late twenties, but when I did, I went big and moved to New Zealand. I’m currently living in England, and as someone who must eat breakfast, I’ve found my best travel tip is to pick up a pizza to have for breakfast…even a bad pizza (I’m looking at you Budapest) is still pretty good. In a hotel? Shove it in the minibar and eat it cold. I’m a house? Heat it up. I find I’m much more amenable to a late lunch if I’ve had a slice for breakfast. I’m also a huge believer in grocery store rotisserie chickens for easy dinners.

On museums, it’s really important to hit the “important” ones as soon as they open. My nieces wanted to see the mummies at the Louvre, and we got there in the afternoon. Total disaster. A mass of disgusting bodies, and that was the visitors. Because of course everybody else who has kids needs time to get out of the house and they all seem to arrive en masse around 2 p.m.
Although it’s great to see as many different places as possible, I am big on a hub-and-spoke strategy of day trips, where you go back to the same place for several days, if not the whole trip. Basically you’re exchanging your check-in/check-out, packing up/unpacking drill with an hour or two of travel in and out of town.

We have travelled a lot with our kids (age 2 1/2 and 6 1/2) but we have family in England and Africa so it’s a little different. I am so impressed with your light packing. I am terrible at overpacking me and the kids.

I am loving that photo with the lays potato chips! Real life! We just took our boys 3 and almost 1 to Ireland. And it’s true, it really is a relocation! I look forward to exposing them to more travel experiences in the future!

I felt like I was right there with you. I liked the restaurants comment…reminds me of what we take for granted in the USA.

I agree with your sentiment. It is important to expose your children to travel, different cultures, all of it. I have so many feels about this! My husband and I have traveled overseas with our children twice . Our first big trip was to Ireland when my youngest was five. We’ve been to London with them too. If I could afford it, I’d use our passports every year. Our children are now 20 as of yesterday, (Mother’s Day), 18, & 12. Time FLIES. Good for you and your husband that you took the plunge. You’ll never ever forget it. 🙂

Grand idea; simple plans; good communication –memories forever.
Thanks!
