Thank you so much for sharing this! I too studied abroad in Italy (Florence), and so appreciated the food culture there. Never any rush, just you and the people you loved most and some good food. I miss that.

The idea that a meal could be church – I love that! Growing up conservative Catholic, my idea of church and God were very specific. But lately I’ve realized that God can come in so many forms and I don’t have to be in a fancy building for it to be church. I resonated so much with your post.

And now I think I’m going to have to buy some truffle oil! 🙂

I have been following your blog for a couple of years now, but this post, is by far my favorite to date. It makes me want to go out and (sell something valuable) so I can buy a truffle!

Suar Angelina made those eggs! I was so sad to hear she had passed when I went back in 2009. She is the sister that got me addicted to espresso from the nights on dish duty. I remember asking her what she put in her dishes to make them so good and she said, "A little bit of this and a little bit of that." Our semester in Italy influenced me profoundly in so many ways and a great reason why I now work in the travel industry. Though I've had the opportunity to travel to many places, I'm always chasing the opportunity to get back to Italy and especially our little hilltop village. Great read and to share in the profound impact Italy had on our life and careers.

I got goosebumps reading this, Ashley. The image of families sitting around the table digging into big bowls of pasta make my heart ache for our years spent in Europe. I do my best to cultivate the same here back in Canada but it’s a struggle – feeling rushed. Thank you for reminding me that that culture and intense passion for food and family lives inside me too, and not in another time or country.
